Michael Owen has returned to the Maldives to host a youth
football camp at Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort, continuing what is set to become
an annual tradition following the success of last year’s programme.
The 2026 edition of the camp began with a family-friendly
cocktail and mocktail evening, setting an upbeat tone for several days of
football and recreational activities. Running from March 30 to April 3, the
programme brings together more than 30 children and teenagers for daily
training sessions led by Owen and his team of assistant coaches.
Participants are taking part in structured coaching sessions
designed to develop skills, teamwork, and confidence, while also enjoying a
broader holiday experience.

The resort has incorporated a range of activities
beyond football, catering not only to young players but also to accompanying
families.
Speaking about his return, Owen said the decision to bring
the camp back was an easy one.
“Coming back to Avani+ Fares Maldives feels like a natural
next step after the energy and enthusiasm we saw at the first camp,” he said.
“It is a special environment for families, and the camp is
all about helping kids build confidence, develop their skills, and most
importantly, enjoy the game together. I am really looking forward to being back
on the island in 2026.”
Owen is widely regarded as one of England’s greatest
strikers, having played for top clubs including Liverpool FC, Real Madrid, and
Manchester United, as well as representing the England national football team.
In 2001, he won the prestigious Ballon d'Or and was later
named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players.
The return of the football camp signals Avani+ Fares
Maldives’ ambition to establish the programme as a recurring feature on its
events calendar, combining sports tourism with family-focused hospitality.
With growing participation and international appeal, the
initiative reflects a broader trend of resorts in the Maldives expanding into
experiential offerings that go beyond traditional leisure travel.
